AFC TOTTON were crowned Southern League Division One South champions thanks to a 1-0 victory over Exmouth Town, writes Benjamin Rees.

The Stags were looking to make their incredible home support of 1,727 at Snows Stadium count with a strong start, and they caused Exmouth a number of problems from set pieces.

They made the breakthrough when an intelligent short corner routine saw Charlie Davis fall in the box for a clear penalty, which Scott Rendell duly dispatched in the 17th minute for the game’s only goal.

Town improved after conceding but found home goalkeeper Lewis Noice equal to everything they could throw at him.

The second half lacked clear-cut chances, with both sides struggling somewhat to hit their best rhythm, with the Stags wary of becoming too open and allowing the visitors a way back into the game.

As the clock ticked on, the sense of anxious anticipation in the ground began to build, with a now makeshift Totton back-line after a number of injuries defending resolutely.

After what must have seemed an eternity for the home support, the final whistle finally came to send the stadium into raptures.

AFC Totton were officially named champions with two league games still left to play - a fair reward for a team that has undoubtedly been the class of the division this season.
