JAMES Vince made an unbeaten 70 but Hampshire were all out for 167 on day one of their pre-season friendly against Sussex at Hove.

Vince soon lost opening partner Joe Weatherley (five) and Hampshire were 38 -4 when Aneurin Donald (3), Sam Northeast (0) and Liam Dawson (0) were dismissed in successive overs.

But he shared an unbroken stand of 85 in 19 overs with Tom Alsop (37) before he eventually retired after hitting eight fours and two sixes from 93 balls.

Alsop faced 59 balls and hit four fours and a six, but Gareth Berg (25) was the only other Hampshire player to reach double figures.

George Garton took 3-61 for Sussex, including the wicket of Keith Barker, while former Hampshire spinner Danny Briggs (6.4-0-35-1) dismissed Hampshire’s other new signing, James Fuller.

Twelve Hampshire players had the chance to bat with Oliver Soames (4) and Lewis McManus (3) also out cheaply as Luke Wells took 2-15 with his occasional leg spin.

Sussex made 150-3 in reply with Barker (5-2-25-2) and Fuller (6-1-21-1) taking the wickets.

Philip Salt made 74 from 85 balls (11 fours, one six) before he was bowled by Fuller.

He shared a third -wicket stand of 77 with Harry Finch (37no), who added an unbroken 32 with Luke Wright (20) before stumps.

Hampshire play Sussex again today.
