Residents of a quiet Fair Oak road have told of their shock after two people were arrested on suspicion of a possible serious attack on a vulnerable woman.

On Monday evening, paramedics treated a 60-year-old woman who was found in a “critical condition” in a house in Ridgeway Close, Fair Oak.

The woman was rushed to hospital for treatment - and those living nearby said the home became a “revolving door of police and forensic teams’ throughout Tuesday, with it cordoned off.

On Wednesday morning, police confirmed they had arrested a 61-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman from Fair Oak on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and causing or allowing a vulnerable adult to suffer serious physical harm.

Neighbours have reacted with concern to the news.

A resident of the area for more than 20 years, who did not wish to be named, said: “It’s such a shock when something like this happens on your doorstep.

“We did start to think that it must be something serious due to the number of officers that were here."

They added: “On Monday I looked out and suddenly saw an ambulance out the front – then police showed up in their droves and we knew it was bad.

“I had not seen the lady in question for years – it is an awful situation.”

Another Ridgeway Close resident of almost 10 years added: “It’s very shocking for me – I freaked out when I saw the ambulance.

“I’m so sorry to hear that the lady has been injured, I hope she is okay.”

Another resident said: “I know who they are and I’m terribly sorry that this has happened. I would not want to speculate as we only have very limited detail at the moment.

“That poor lady. I only noticed yesterday when I went to put the bin out. I felt very sad when I saw forensics as that made me feel something bad had happened.”

The pair have been bailed while police continue their investigation into how the woman was injured.

Detective Inspector Emma Barrow, the investigating officer, said: "I know it may be concerning for people to see police in the Ridgeway Close area.

"I want to reassure you this is an incident where all of those involved are known to each other and there is no wider concern for the community."

She added: "If you have any concerns or any information which may assist our investigation, then please do not hesitate speak with us."
