A man pushed over a dog walker in a park, fracturing her wrist before proceeding to throw yoghurt at her.

Marc Smith attacked the woman as she walked her dog in a park in Eastleigh, Southampton Crown Court heard.

Smith, 44, was sitting on a bench when the woman approached to retrieve her dog.

He whispered something, causing her to come closer, at which point he stood up and flicked her on both shoulders before pushing her back.

The woman fell to the ground, fracturing her wrist before standing up and getting her phone out to capture evidence.

Smith continued though, approaching her again and throwing yoghurt over her bag.

The incident, which took place on September 23 last year, was reported to police but Smith refused to engage with police.

Prosecutor, Nicola Sully said he refused to come out of his cell to be interviewed, would not engage with the probation service and even turned down the opportunity to instruct solicitors to defend him in court.

Smith, currently of HMP Winchester, was convicted by a jury of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on February 23 this year, having been remanded in custody since October 3.

He failed to attend the trial and subsequent sentencing hearing on Friday.

Ms Sully said the incident was "impulsive but short-lived" adding that he was on bail for another offence at the time.

Smith, who was unrepresented at his sentencing hearing, has 22 previous convictions for 50 offences including battery, harassment and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

He was jailed for six months.

Judge Nicholas Rowland said he had "not engaged with anybody", adding that he was "left with no option than to sentence him in his absence.

"This was an unpleasant assault on a lady who was walking her dog. Obviously, this was upsetting for her.

"For good measure, he also threw some yoghurt in her direction."
