Meanwhile, an Eastleigh mum has told of her terror after waking up to a huge blaze outside the window of her home, which has resulted in her week of plans being ruined.

Jennett Unwin, of Drum Road, Eastleigh, had a week of activities including a wedding and trips with friends, until her plans were ruined by a fire that destroyed her car and damaged her home.

Jennett, whose house was burned in the fire, has shared her terrifying experience with the Echo.

She said: “I heard this terrible bang and people shouting outside.

“I tried looking out the window, but all I could see was flames and smoke and water. It was absolutely terrifying, not knowing what was going on.

“I wasn’t sure if the house was on fire or what had happened. I had no idea what to do. I didn’t know what was happening. It was just pure panic in that moment.

“What was even worse is that the front exit and the back exit to my house were both blocked by the fire in the cars. Thankfully, a firefighter knocked on my back door after taking a ladder over the front."

The Eastleigh mother said that her son is a firefighter for Hampshire Fire and Rescue so she knew many of his colleagues that came over the garden fence to her rescue.

Her window was smashed and the front door warped from the heat of the fire.

She added: “We sat down, had a cup of tea and they instantly told me that the situation was under control.

“The fire service were absolutely fantastic. We stayed inside until the fire had cleared - this is the first day of my weeks annual leave.

“I have already been in touch with my car and home insurance companies, but I had so much planned this week which I will no longer be able to go to.

“I had so many plans with friends and even have a wedding to attend at the end of the week. That’s all very uncertain now as I’m without a car.

“Although the impact on me is frustrating, I’m just glad that everyone is safe and no one was hurt.

“When thinking about those who started this fire, I get very cross and angry. If it hadn’t been for the quick actions of the fire department - I could have died.”

Four fire engines with crews from Eastleigh, Redbridge and St Mary’s attended the blaze along with police officers and an ambulance.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Fire and Rescue said: “Just after 5 am on Monday 11 March, crews from Eastleigh, Redbridge and St Mary’s were called to a vehicle fire on Drum Road in Eastleigh.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels and jets to extinguish 5 vehicles.

“The cause of the fire is currently unknown. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service is working with police to investigate.”

Other residents of Drum Road have also told of their experience on Monday morning.

Joanne Burgess, who lives three doors down from the fire said: “Around 5am, I heard bangs outside.

“I pulled up the blinds and the whole street was orange. I could see flames coming from a van down the road.

“Instantly, I rang 999 and told them what was going on. It was so shocking and I just didn’t expect there to be huge flames in the middle of the street.

“I woke my daughter up to alert her to the danger and by the time we had gone downstairs, and the Fire Brigade were already there. There were two fire engines and ambulance and the police car.”

Another resident, Kamal Bahadur Purja, who has lived in Drum Road since 2006, said: “Gosh, the scene is absolutely horrifying.

“Ever since I’ve lived here, we’ve never had an incident quite as horrific as this. This is a nice family area and you don’t expect this sort of thing to be going on.”
