An XL Bully owner says the new restrictions on the breed are “awful and disgusting” after owners are now required to muzzle and keep their dogs on a lead in public places.

This comes as the full ban on the breed comes into force in the UK in February. The ban comes after several incidents of the breed attacking people.

Andy Smith, 39, from Hythe, owns three XL Bullies and has told of the joy of seeing his six-year-old daughter, Sienna, playing with XL Bully Maze.

She has a condition that affects the development of children's ears, nose, lips or jaw.

He said: “My daughter has Goldenhar syndrome, and she walks our biggest dog Maze and loves throwing her ball at the park.

“Now that is something special and wholesome that she will never again get the chance to do again.

“She is devastated and heartbroken and, being autistic, she doesn’t understand why she can’t do it any longer."

Under the new restrictions, it is also illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange, abandon or let XL Bully dogs stray.

Andy added: “There has been no support from Government for owners. We have been left on our own.

“It is now costing Bully owners around £1,000 to get their dogs certificated and insured plus needing to buy muzzles.”

The Hampshire branch of The Dogs Trusts is now offering XL Bully owners guidance.

A spokesperson said: “From 1 February 2024 it will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully type dog in England unless your dog has a valid Certificate of Exemption.

“Once you have applied for your Certificate of Exemption, you will also need to provide proof that your dog has been neutered.

“You must provide evidence to Defra that your dog has been neutered - owners and vets must complete the VCN01 form and return to Defra by 30 June 2024.

“Before you apply for a Certificate of Exemption you must visit the Gov website to pay the £92.40 application fee for each dog.

“You will need to note down your 10-digit payment reference number as you will need this to get your certificate.

“Owner also need third party liability insurance and you will need to know the start date of that insurance.

“You’ll need to provide your dog’s microchip number. If you don’t know this, speak to your vet.”
