STORM Arwen has forced the cancellation of Christmas events across the south.

Gosport and New Milton are among the towns that have scrapped festive celebrations because of high winds and the resulting danger to public safety.

Gosport's Christmas lights were due to have been switched on today.

But a borough council spokesman said the ceremony was called off amid fears that dangerously high winds would make the event unsafe.

He said winds would be strong enough to wreck marquees and stage structures and thus endanger people gathered nearby.

A stage show and a traditional Christmas lights switch-on countdown had been planned.

Organisers are hoping much of the programme will be moved to December 18 as an event featuring street entertainment is already planned for that date.

The Christmas tree is in place and decorated but the lights will now be turned on remotely.

The council leader, Cllr Graham Burgess, said: "We're very sorry to have to make the decision to cancel events but the safety of residents comes first.

"We're working hard to see if we can bring acts and attractions to our December 18 event instead."

Today's Christmas festival at New Milton has also been cancelled because of high winds.

A spokesman said: "The safety of the public, stallholders and participants are our primary concern thus this decision has been made in consultation with the town council and other interested parties.

"There is a possibility that it may be moved to the December 4 but that has yet to be confirmed."

Meanwhile a three-day Christmas fair in aid of Oakhaven Hospice in Lymington has been cancelled because of the increase in Covid infections.

The fair was due to start next Thursday but has been called off.

An Oakhaven spokesperson said: "Covid is still very much part of our lives and with cases rising, Oakhaven wants the local community, volunteers, staff and those we care for to stay safe this Christmas.

"We have made a difficult decision to cancel the Christmas fair.

"We are looking to sell some items including hampers online for collection; more details on this will be released next week once finalised."
