MULTIPLE areas of Southampton are at high risk of flooding according to the Government.

A new interactive map on the gov.uk website shows that parts of the city along the River Test and River Itchen are at an increased risk.

As well as this, other areas across the city including Regents Park, Maybush and Lordswood are also said to be at a medium risk of a flood.

This comes as the Met Office has warned of wetter conditions over the coming months as plenty of rain is expected in January and February.

Southampton City Council recently approved the River Itchen Flood Alleviation Scheme which aims to mitigate and reduce the flooding risk in the area.

Cabinet member for the environment at the council, Cllr Steven Galton added that The Southampton Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Strategy outlines proposals for coastal flood defences in Southampton

This is due to be revised by 2023 to take into account the latest climate change predictions.

Despite this though, Southampton Test MP, Alan Whitehead hit out at the council for its decisions regarding climate change.

He said: "I understand the city has recently approved flood defences for some of the areas however I do worry that some areas remain unprotected.

"The issue is that we will be seeing more unpredictable weather year on year if nothing is done to tackle the climate crisis.

"The local Conservatives refused to acknowledge this recently by rejecting calls for an ambitious net zero target of 2035 for the city."

But councillor Galton added: "A new Local Flood Risk Management Strategy is underway and will be completed by the end of 2022 and is aimed at raising awareness of Southampton’s flood risk and how it is proposed this will be managed.

"Future schemes could include attenuation schemes – where water is temporarily stored, before use of flow systems allows it to be routed through normal drainage routes – and Daisy Dip is one location that would be a priority for this."

Partnership working with Southern Water to examine options to reduce flooding to Millbrook Road West is said to be currently underway with the council saying it is also looking to tackle other “hotspots”.
