A new business has launched at Andover market today (September 2) bringing delicious pizzas to the high street.

Nidge’s Artisan Pizza Kitchen is set to be regular feature in the weekly markets from now on, as well as popping up at other venues around Andover. The owner, chef Nigel Male, told the Advertiser that it has been an ambition of his for some time.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” he said. “I’ve worked in other places but I’ve wanted to do something mobile.

“Covid has taught me to go for things or you might not get to do it.”

The business uses a variety of local produce for its pizzas, including pepperoni and salami from Parsonage Farm in Upton, and honey from Becky’s Bees. The design, uniforms and many other non-edible features of the business are also sourced from locals, with the only hold-out being cheese at the moment, with Nigel on the lookout for a local cheese supplier.

A cut of proceeds from the opening is intended for Koala, the neurodivergency hub supporting people of all ages in Andover. It was set by Tori Rist earlier this year, who had recently had funding to expand its offering.

“It’s amazing,” she said. “It’s our first fundraiser event and it’s been really good. I’m really grateful they asked us to come along.”

A parent who has been supported by the group, Amy, was at the opening, and said of Koala: “I went to one of the parents’ groups, and it’s been a delight. It’s nice to have people in similar situations and support for parents, as there isn’t anything local for parents and children with a disability that’s quite like it.

“It’s like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders now I know where to go.”

The first pizza from the business’ wood-fired oven was made by Councillor Iris Andersen, who represents St Mary’s Ward on Test Valley Borough Council.

She said that Koala was a “very good local charity, and a really worthwhile cause.”

Koala is hosting a fundraising event on September 26 at the Queen Charlotte Inn, with offers of support welcome at: tori@moreeducation.co.uk
