CIVIC chiefs are studying plans to redevelop part of the site occupied by a pub renowned for its fundraising success.

Cordage 23 Ltd has applied for permission to build two detached houses in the grounds of the Wheatsheaf Inn at Christchurch Road, New Milton.

The application has sparked several letters of objection from people worried about the potential impact on the pub.

One of the letters says charity events have raised large sums for causes such as the Hampshire Air Ambulance, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Children in Need.

It adds: "The music and entertainment we all enjoy at these events will be severely impacted if the garden is reduced by two thirds, as is proposed, and the footfall will be greatly reduced."

But the application says the proposed development would enhance the area by replacing the pub's existing car park, which it describes as "visually unappealing".

Reducing the size of the beer garden to accommodate a new car park would only cause a "very small" amount of harm.

It adds: "The proposed development would provide two new homes in a largely residential area with good access to local amenities.

"The dwellings have been designed to be sensitive to their setting and complement local design features."

The scheme is outlined in a Public Notice published by New Forest District Council, which will decide the application.

Here is a round-up of other Public Notices detailing temporary road closures, licensing applications and other proposals affecting the area.
