A MAN has been arrested after two police officers were attacked whilst investigating a shoplifting.

Yesterday, a man was arrested in Totton after two police officers who were investigating a shoplifting were attacked.

At around 5.10pm, two men are said to have entered a Co-Op store on Rumbridge Street.

The men then picked up items totalling £143 and after making no attempt to pay, left the store.

The public alerted police who then chased the men on foot, catching and detaining two men.

One of the men, a 34-year-old, was arrested after a struggle where he is said to have assaulted two officers.

A quantity of Class A drugs were also found.

The man was arrested on suspicion of one count of theft from a shop, possession of a Class A drug, using threatening / abusive words / behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress and three counts of assault of an emergency worker.

He currently remains in custody.

The other man involved was searched but was found to not have any items on him.
