A CHILDREN'S charity has announced that one of its shops will not be reopening after the lockdown ends.

The Barnardo's store in Commercial Road, Totton, has closed for good in a move which could result in the loss of several jobs.

Barnardo's says the economic impact of the pandemic means it would not be financially viable to reopen the shop when restrictions are eased.

Totton residents who want to donate items to the charity will have to make an eight-mile round trip to Shirley.

Writing on social media the manager, Nicki Desty, said: "With great sadness I have to announce that we will not reopen after lockdown and that I/we are being made redundant.

"I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for all your custom and friendship over the past 7.5 years (in my case).

"It has been a pleasure to get to know you all and forge friendships that will last."

Steve Mitchell, the charity's area business manager, told the Daily Echo: "It is with great sadness that I’m announcing we have made the difficult decision to close the Totton store.

"Barnardo’s has had a shop on that site for many years and we had hoped to be able to continue for many years to come.

"Sadly the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic have made this no longer financially viable and therefore the store shall remain permanently closed.

“I would like to express my gratitude to all the amazing staff and volunteers who have provided exemplary service to our customers over the years.

"We are doing everything we can to ensure as many of our colleagues as possible can continue to work and volunteer with us in other local stores.

"I’d also like to say 'thank you' to everyone who has supported us by shopping in our store and by donating items to help Barnardo’s raise much needed funds to support vulnerable children, young people and families."

Totton councillor David Harrison described the store's closure as a "great shame".

He added: "This was quite a popular charity shop, providing employment, including work experience for people. It also raised money for a very good cause."

The nearest Barnardo’s store to Totton is at Unit 10, Shirley Shopping Precinct.
