CONTRACTORS were hoping to rescue the digger from the River Itchen this afternoon.

A team wearing high-vis and helmets were first seen at Cow Down, Itchen Abbas, at around 10.45am.

As previously reported the vehicle, which was thought to have been used for Environment Agency work, became submerged yesterday afternoon.

Today the contractors hooked the digger up to a tractor and a truck in hope of towing it to safety.

Hampshire Chronicle:

During the time a Chronicle reporter was at the scene, the digger did not seem to move.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: "The incident of the digger in the River Itchen at Itchen Abbas has been reported to us and we are aware.

"Our officers have attended the site, carried out a full investigation and have removed all fuel from the vehicle to prevent leakage into the river.

"There has been no pollution as a result of this incident.

"If people suspect pollution they can report it to our incident line on 0800 807060."

The spokesperson added that a crane would arrive on site to remove the digger.
