A man has pleaded not guilty to the murder of 16-year-old Louise Smith, who was found dead in woodland after disappearing on VE Day.

The teenager was last seen alive in Somborne Drive in the Leigh Park area of Havant, Hampshire, at midday on May 8.

Her body was found at nearby Havant Thicket on May 21.

Shane Mays, 29, of Havant, pleaded not guilty to murder during a short hearing at Winchester Crown Court.

The judge, Mrs Justice May, adjourned the case until the trial, which is expected to last about four weeks, starting on November 10, with a further preliminary hearing on October 2.

Remanding the defendant in custody, she told him: “The trial is currently booked for November 10 although it may move back a week or two depending on the outcome of investigations I must make.

“It will happen at this court and the date will be confirmed in due course.”

Louise’s family said in a statement released through Hampshire Police: “Louise was a typical 16-year-old girl, who enjoyed spending time with her friends. She loved animals and being outdoors.

“She will be remembered as a smiley, generous person who loved her family and was loved by all.”

They added: “Louise had beautiful blue eyes, a cheeky smile and was known for her kindness to others. She loved animals and had a sarcastic sense of humour.”

Hundreds of bikers turned out for Louise’s funeral last week, with purple ribbons lining the procession route while Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower was lit up in purple as a mark of respect.

A 29-year-old woman, who was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender in connection with the investigation, has been released on bail, Hampshire Police said.
