HOUSES in a Hampshire street were evacuated after the discovery of object believed to be a wartime shell.

Road closures were put in place after the device was found at a property in Heather Road, Blackfield, earlier today.

Waterside Cops posted: "Thank you to the residents of Heather Road this afternoon for their patience and understanding while officers from Waterside Neighbourhood and Lyndhurst Response & Patrol Teams dealt with a report of a possible unexploded wartime shell at a property there.

"Thanks also to our colleagues from the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Team who have attended and quickly resolved the situation allowing restrictions to be lifted and the small number of residents evacuated to return home promptly.

"No persons have been hurt and all road blocks in and around Heather Road have been lifted."

No further details about the incident have been released.
