MORE than 100 people have slammed plans for a new car wash at a Hampshire supermarket.

Waves Valeting Services wants to use more than 14 existing spaces at the Asda car park in Maynard Road, Totton

The proposal involves installing a concrete washing platform, a canopy and a cabin which would be used as a customer reception and storage area.

However, the plans have received 112 letters of objection from locals concerned over the use of cleaning chemicals, traffic and the loss of parking spaces at an already busy supermarket.

Residents have also pointed out the fact that another car wash already exists in nearby Ringwood Road.

Totton resident, Helena Sebestova, said: “Totton does not need another car wash, especially in the centre of Totton. The area is very built up and struggles with traffic jams.”

Bertie Hall added: “I don’t think its a good idea to build another car wash in Asda, the car park is already very busy. During busy times it is impossible to park as it is.”

According to the planning application submitted to New Forest District Council, the car wash will create new and sustainable economic growth in the area.

Similarly, it is claimed the business will have a positive impact on local employment creating an estimated four full-time and four part-time jobs.

The application states: “It is likely that the facility will be used in association with any trip to the supermarket rather than resulting in a purpose-built trip.”

However, the application has been recommended for refusal by Totton and Eling Town Council.

David Harrison the county councillor for Totton South and Marchwood said: “I think it is probably one more car wash than we need. There is already one at the Esso garage and one immediately opposite. The car park is extremely busy so anything added will cause traffic and frustration. It is probably the busiest car park in Totton – I don’t think it’s needed.”
