VILLAGERS and visitors to the New Forest are again being urged not to leave apples out for ponies.
Eating large quantities of the fruit can result in ponies suffering a severe abdominal condition which can prove fatal.
The Verderers have tweeted a warning after a bag of apples was left beside the B3078 in the north of the district.
The message said: "Do not dispose of windfall apples on the forest. You may think you are helping the ponies but you are not.
"Apples in quantity can cause colic, a painful condition which can kill. Whole apples can cause choking.
A few weeks ago more than 500 apples were found by the Forestry England ranger at the Darkwater car park, near Blackfield.
Two cows and a pony are thought to have died earlier this year after eating grass cuttings which has been dumped in the Forest.
