Lymington and Pennington Carnival to hit the streets tomorrow

A HAMPSHIRE town is preparing to focus on the biggest environmental issue facing the human race.

Saving the Planet is the theme of this year’s Lymington and Pennington Carnival, which hits the streets tomorrow.

Many of the floats will highlight the issues of global warming, rising sea levels and plastic pollution.

A carnival spokesman said: “The theme of Saving the Planet offers endless possibilities for entrants to show off their imagination and flare while raising awareness of how we should be paying more attention to sustainability ecological matters.

“Those taking part as individuals will no doubt take pride in their costumes.

“For the groups it will be a great teambuilding opportunity whether you are an individual, family or group. The experience will be unique, memorable and fun.”

The Lions Club of Lymington and Brockenhurst has organised the event.

Entrants are being encouraged to make something out of plastic bottles, promote cycling or recycling, or dress up as solar panels, windmills and wind turbines. They can display their own version of an electric car.

In a message to entrants the organisers say: “If that sounds a little too serious, why not look to your favourite cartoon of TV/film character who is saving the world from evil?”

The floats will move off from the town hall in Avenue Road, Lymington, at 11am.

They will complete a tour of the town centre, travelling along Avenue Road, Southampton Road, Queen Street, St Thomas Street, High Street, Gosport Street, Cannon Street, North Street and East Hill before returning to Avenue Road. The High Street will be closed between its junctions with Church Lane and New Street from 10am until 12.30pm.

The theme of last year’s carnival was TV shows, with thousands of people lining the streets to see some of Britain’s best-loved dramas brought to life by the procession.
