A HAMPSHIRE council has bestowed a new honour on two former members who served electors for a total of more than 40 years.

Colin Wise and Di Brooks were made honorary aldermen during a ceremony at the headquarters of New Forest District Council.

The two Tories were both members of the council's ruling cabinet.

Their names are the first to appear on a newly created role of honour which aims to recognise long-serving former members who never had the chance to serve as chairman of the council.

Mr Wise, who represented Boldre and Sway, was proposed by the leader of the council, Cllr Barry Rickman.

He said: " If anyone lives up to his name, this man does. He always had sound advice and was a gentleman who always listened to every point of view."

Mrs Brooks, who represented Totton, was unable to attend the ceremony.
