A BUSY Hampshire road is to be the subjects of closures for more than a week.

The Totton bypass will close from 10pm to 6am from April 23 until May 3 to allow street lighting works.

The works will be carried out by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) on behalf of Hampshire County Council.

The authority said the sign posted routes will be via Redbridge/Nursling/Ower/Netley Marsh/Totton (M271, M27, A326 A35) and vice versa, for motorway traffic and via Redbridge/Shirley/Romsey/Ower/Netley Marsh /Totton (A35/A3057/A3090/A36/A326) and vice versa, for non-motorway traffic.

The county council said access to premises adjacent to the closed road will be maintained while the work is undertaken.

A spokesman for SSE said: “This essential maintenance work is required as the street lights are coming to the end of their operational life. Works will be completed before Friday May 3, if possible.

To allow our teams to safely carry out the works, a night time road closure will be required from 10pm to 6am, excluding the weekend of 27 and 28 April.

These works are not expected to impact local power supplies to the community. If residents experience a loss of power, they should contact their distribution network operator on the emergency power cut number 105.”

The works will be carried out a few days before a major scheme to upgrade the nearby Redbridge Roundabout starts.

As reported, works on the roundabout will start on May 1 and are expected to run until spring 2020.

The scheme, set to cost between £12 million and £15.5 million, will add an extra lane to ease congestion for vehicles travelling from the motorway to the city centre and the port.
