A CAT was thrown into a river in Salisbury this weekend in a deliberate attempt to drown it, in what an animal charity described as a "truly shocking incident".

A man was seen attempting to throw the cat into the River Avon near the Boat House pub at about 11.15am yesterday (Sunday).

The suspect is described as being a white, middle aged man, about 5’8” with curly hair.

He was carrying the cat inside a Tesco’s shopping bag.

He was near the pub when a couple challenged his behaviour, and took the cat from him after he told them he had tried to drown it and indicated he was going to try again.

The cat has since been returned to its owner and has recovered after the incident.

RSPCA inspector Claire Carter, who is investigating for the animal welfare charity, said: “This is a truly shocking incident. Thankfully it is rare that we hear of such deliberately cruel cases in the area.

“I’m just grateful a member of the public witnessed what was happening and managed to rescue the cat, who’s now back with their owner and fully recovered.

“We are really keen to hear from anyone who witnessed this, or can help with our investigations, to identify the person involved. Anyone who can help should call our inspectorate appeal line on 0300 123 8018.”
