SMASH hit Broadway musical The Book of Mormon is to grace the stage in Southampton next year, the Daily Echo can today reveal.

The celebrated show from the creators of South Park is to enjoy a three week run at Mayflower Theatre in 2020 - and tickets go on sale next week.

The Tony, Olivier and Grammy Award winning show tells the story of a pair of Mormon boys sent on a mission to a place that’s a long way from their home in Salt Lake City.

Dubbed God’s favourite musical, it sees the two Mormon missionaries sent to a remote village in Uganda to spread the word of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They find their mission rather difficult, however, as the villagers are a bit more concerned about the various pressing issues they face, including famine, AIDS and oppression.

The Book of Mormon was written by Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are the creators of the Emmy and Peabody award-winning television show, South Park, now in its 22nd season, and the feature films South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut and Team America: World Police.

Robert Lopez co-created the Broadway musical Avenue Q and co-wrote the songs for Disney’s Frozen and Coco. He is one of only 15 artists to win all four major entertainment awards - Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards.

Since making its world premiere in March 2011 in New York at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, where it won nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, The Book of Mormon has been performed on three continents and won over 30 international awards. The musical has smashed long standing box office records in New York, London, Melbourne, Sydney and various cities across the U.S.

The London production opened in February 2013, winning four Olivier Awards including Best New Musical, and breaking the record for the highest single day of sales in West End history. It has sold out every one of its nearly 3000 performances to date at the Prince of Wales Theatre in the West End and continues to delight audiences and critics.

The Book of Mormon runs from Wednesday May 27 until Saturday June 13.
