FOLLOWING the news that Let’s Rock 2021 will be coming to Southampton Common this summer, the Echo looks back at Power in the Park 7.

It was a big day for one local singing sensation - but this time it wasn’t Craig David.

An estimated 50,000 people filled the Common 20 years ago to enjoy the unbeatable combination of live action from some of the UK’s biggest chart stars and glorious sunshine - and all of it completely free.

A star-studded line-up of 21 acts, including Steps, Hear’Say, Emma Bunton, Ash and Ocean Colour Scene made it the biggest Power In The Park the city had seen.

Opening the event in perfect pop style were Hear’Say. The Fab Five, who shot to fame on the back of the ITV talent show Popstars, performed three songs, including Bridge Over Troubled Water and their first single, Pure And Simple.

Following them onto the stage, which was flanked by two giant screens showing live action, was a mix of established names and new, up-and-coming acts.

The biggest sensations of the day, after Hear’Say, were Spice Girl-turned-successful solo artist Emma Bunton and headlining act Steps.

Bunton - whose boyfriend, Jade, was also part of the Power line-up with his band, Damage - sang three songs, including her new single, Sunshine On A Rainy Day.

Steps closed the show with a rapturously-received 25-minute set, whipping the crowds into a frenzy of excitement with their dizzying cocktail of classic pop tunes and kiddie-friendly dance moves.

Steps member Lee said afterwards: “We’ve really had a good time. The response was terrific.”

Also given a warm welcome was Southampton’s very own Aaron Soul. The UK garage hot property, who was being tipped as the next Craig David, wowed the audience with two of his songs, including single Ring Ring Ring.
