Margaret Thatcher made way as Prime Minister to John Major, the average house set you back by only £58,153, and a pint of milk cost just 30p.

The world was going absolutely crazy for four people in 1990 - Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and Leonardo.

The public had not suddenly become super cultured and taken an interest in High Renaissance art – it was less about Italian polymaths and more about sewer-dwelling mutants with a penchant for pizza and a love of fighting crime.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – or the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, as they were originally called in the UK – had taken the world by storm. They were creating a renaissance of their own, one which changed the language of children the world over.

Daily Echo:

Suddenly youngsters were using words such as ‘bodacious’, ‘gnarly’ and ‘Cowabunga’.

Everyone was going crazy for the comics, cartoons, action figures and even the new movie. Turtles merchandise was almost impossible to obtain for Christmas.

That was when the Turtles had reached the zenith of their popularity.

There have been various reboots and re-imaginings in the years since in an attempt to capture the hearts and imaginations of new generations of children.

Daily Echo:

But isn’t it about time we original fans got an update?

It could be in the form of Middle-Aged Mutant Ninja Turtles - a show where the green quartet get a paunch, give up pizza because of their cholesterol and wake up each night without fail to visit the toilet.

Until then we will have to reminisce with these pictures taken in Hampshire in 1990.
