HUNDREDS of budding Formula One stars took to the grid in the Bishop’s Waltham Scouts’ Kart Grand Prix – all eager to achieve a podium finish.
There was no help from turbocharged Ferrari engines or the like when, on June 4, 1983, more than 250 youngsters used their muscle power to compete.
Cubs and Scouts from Bishop’s Waltham, Shedfield and Swanmore took part in the event.
There were practice sessions and elimination heats before the big race, and prizes were awarded in a “concour d’elegance” for ingenuity in kart design.
Later, there was a camp fire and entertainment enjoyed by all.
