WHEN this picture was taken Robert Gascoyne-Cecil was Prime Minister, bread cost pennies and houses were on the market for a few hundred pounds.

Portswood at the turn of the century was a very different looking place – as this image shows.

Hodges Stores occupied the premises on the corner of Portswood Road and St Denys Road, a space now home to Trago Lounge.

People busied the street and a sign advertising a shaving service was prominently displayed on the facades of the buildings.
