ATHLETIC abilities were put to the test at the Hampshire School's Championships on June 9, 1990.

Starof the field events was Eastleigh and Winchester's Gary Sollitt with a winning 14.65 in the senior boys' shot – well over a metre clear of teammate Simon Burdett.

Burdett made amends in the discus, heading the way with 43.52

Southampton junior sprint starlet Simon Bussell clocked 11.9 seconds in his junior boys' 100m heat – just inside the entry standard for the All-England Schools' Championships to be held in Derby a month later. The speedy St Mary's schoolboy won the final in 12 seconds.

Welsh hockey international Richard Markham used athletics only as summer training, but still managed to lead the field for Southampton in the senior boys 400m with a time of 52.2.

There was victory too for Southampton's Phillip Wills in the intermediate boys' shot with 11.94, as well as Eastleigh and Winchester's Andrew Bargh in the junior boys' 80m hurdles in a time of 12.4.
