FOR YEARS they were a familiar sight plodding around the streets of Southampton but this came to an end in 1967 when the last corporation horse retired.
At one time Southampton had dozens of heavy horses, mainly used by road sweepers for pulling dust carts, which were firm favourites with local people, if only for the contributions the animals left behind which were used in the garden.
Some of the horses, which were stabled in Villiers Road, Shirley, are pictured.
Most of the horses instinctively knew their way around the roads and would often stop outside houses where they knew people would always come out with a tasty treat.
