Western Esplande - 1912
TODAY Western Esplanade in Southampton bears little resemblance to how it looked at the early part of the past century.
Houses were built in the area but it was susceptible to flooding, which caused damage to homes, pubs and hotels.
Except for the city walls all evidence of earlier times has been swept away.
This picture, taken on Boxing Day, 1912, shows flooding on Western Esplanade.
The West End Railway Hotel, which dated back to 1880 and can be seen on the left, was demolished in the 1930s to make way for the road from the railway station to the Civic Centre.
