THIS Daily Echo photograph, taken in July 1960, shows a cleared site between High Street and Back of the Walls which was to become a car park.
The accompanying article, entitled “Happy picture for jaded Southampton motorists” says: “It will accommodate about 200 cars.
“A new entrance from High Street, seen at the bottom of the picture, has been cut through on the former blitz site alongside the Star Hotel.
“The site was once the site of the Scrase’s Brewery and stables, a graveyard, basements and an air-raid shelter.”
