THE people of Thornhill came together with one clear message for the government - invest in us, we're worth it.
The area had the chance to gain funding to develop community community facilities as part of the New Deal for Communities fund.
Then-government minister Hilary Armstrong toured Thornhill estate on April 5, 2000, to learn from residents about their hope and aspirations for the area.
Ali McDonald, involved in the Natterbox community centre, knew exactly what she was going to say ahead of the tour.
"I've lived here for 30 years and I know the shortfalls of our estate but I'd still say it's a fine place to live. We just need some help from outside for the new generation – somewhere for them to play, ways to help them go out to work.
"This is what I'll ask for."
These pictures show youngsters from Thornhill Primary at Thornhill Library where they proved how important their community and local services were to them.
