THIS incredible aerial photograph from 1964 shows the final phases of a £7m housing estate project nearing completion in Thornhill.

Progress on two 14-storey blocks can be clearly seen and there are a number of additional reference points – the two Hightown schools in the foreground, for example.

When this shot was taken, the junior school to the right had just been officially opened and the secondary school to the left was used by the younger children during the transitional phase.

The accompanying Daily Echo caption adds: “A block of shops on the estate is nearly finished and on the corner of the Marston Road and Hinkler Road a block of five-storey flats is to be built.

“This will complete the housing development on this great estate, which will provide nearly 3,000 homes forsome 11,000 people eventually.

“Two things started but not yet completed on this 212-acre estate are landscaping and car parking facilities.”
