A BRAVE brunch from Highcliffe took to the cold sea of Mudeford for a charity swim.

The took the plunge on January 1, 1990, in memory of cancer victim Stella Kermode.

Her daughter Jane and son Philip established the sponsored swim as an annual event three years previously and had raised more than £1,200 for the care of other cancer victims and their families in the New Forest.

Stella had helped raise cash for cancer relief herself before she became too ill to do so.

Friends and family rallied round for the daring dip, bringing the total sponsorship that year to £1,500.

It was hoped some of the cash could have been used to pay for a young father who was dying of cancer to take his family on one last holiday.

They were also hoping to pay for driving lessons for a young wife who, until her husband became sick, had relied on him for transport.
