THE Daily Echo takes another glimpse through the lens of time to focus on another month from the past –this week to December 1959.

Southampton port welcomed Hollywood superstars to Britain as they sailed in on Queen Mary. Among them were Alfred Drake and Margaret Leighton.

December 6

Aberdeen trawler George Robb ran aground at Duncansby Head, Scotland during a severe gale. All 12 crew members were lost.

December 8

Broughty Ferry life-boat Mona capsized on its way to North Carr Lightship, Scotland, resulting in the loss of all eight crew members.

December 28

Children’s television series Ivor the Engine was first aired by Associated-Rediffusion. The stop motion animation was created by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin’s Smallfilms.
