SAINTS are set to take on their biggest rivals Portsmouth at Fratton Park in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

It will be the first Hampshire Derby since the two sides met on April 2012, which ended in a 2-2 draw at St Mary’s Stadium.

The last time Saints travelled to Fratton Park was on December 2011, with that fixture also ending in a tie.

Saints last bested Portsmouth in January 2005 with a 2-1 victory in the FA Cup.

Because the fierce rivals have mostly played in different leagues, only 70 Hampshire derbies have occurred since the first in 1899. Of that number, Saints emerged victorious 34 times, lost 21, and tied 15.

The Carabao Cup third round fixture will take place the week beginning Monday, 23 September.

To celebrate this exciting fixture, the Daily Echo looks back at pictures from previous clashes between the two teams.
