PRINCESS Margaret was given a high-tech lesson when she visited Winchester thirty years ago.

The VIP visitor flew into the city by helicopter on April 28, 1989, to take a trip around a science exhibition at Kings School.

She was treated to a colourful, fun display of exhibits, demonstrated by pupils of the Romsey Road school, which showed basic scientific principles in action.

The Princess officially opened the Interactive Technology exhibition and, on arrival, was greeted by a robotic parrot - the centre’s mascot.

With the words “Welcome to Intech Your Royal Highness”, the parrot kicked off the royal visit.

Guided around by director Tony Cardigan, she chatted to pupils and took a keen interest in the Archimedes screw which moves grain.

Kings School pupil Sarah Coombes said: “She said it was fascinating and seemed intrigued about how it worked.”

Earlier in the ay the Princess had officially opened a new £300,000 wing at Pilgrims’ School in the shadow of Winchester Cathedral.
