WITH Shrove Tuesday just a few sleeps away, the Daily Echo takes a look at when competitors in the New Forest looked to batter one another.
An icy dousing in Brockenhurst’s Watersplash awaited entrants in the village’s annual pancake race held February 11, 1986.
As usual, the finish line was the splash itself which, in bitterly cold conditions, meant a cool reception at the race end.
But that did not deter a large number of fancy-dressed entrants taking part, nor hundreds of spectators from braving the wintry weather to cheer them on.
It was the 14th annual event of its kind in the village, and the collecting tins rattled healthily for Children in Need fund.
The children’s races were first, with Sarah Valance winning the girls’ event. The boys’ honours went to Adrian Fowler.
Kim Storey took the ladies’ title and winning man was Shaun Franklin.
In the inter-hotels and restaurants race, victory went to James Sharman.
