FOR 17 years, Nan Yeoman had worked hard to organise the annual Highland Ball - for which she received a presentation gift at the ball in 1971.

Mrs Yeoman, who retired after the previous year’s ball, was an early member of Southampton Caledonian society and had been their Chieftain and secretary.

She was presented with a gift voucher in front of the 250 guests in Scottish national and evening dress who packed Southampton Guildhall on September 24.

Daily Echo:

From it’s birth in 1953, straight through until 1971, the ball had raised £1,542 - not including the £150 raised at the ball in these pictures.

A team of schoolboys, accompanied by a pipe major, gave a dancing display, including the sword dance.

Music for the ball was provided by Bobby Morton’s Scottish Country Dance Band.

The pictures weren’t printed with the Daily Echo report at the time - it’s likely this is the first time these have been seen.
