SOUTHERN EVENING ECHO photographer Gordon Agg-Jones was named Photographer of the Year at the Southern Press Club awards on November 28, 1984.
It was the second trophy Gordon had received in a week with the judges of the £300 Kodak prize claiming the work had "visual impact, feeling and captured the mood of the moment."
Gordon submitted three inspired photographs - he caught a 7 month pregnant Princess Diana leaning over the side of a swimming pool; a cricketer rejoicing after a catch and a hysterical woman being carried off by police after a pelican crossing demonstration.
The same three photographs, along with two others, earned him nominations in the National Ilford competition judged only two weeks prior.
Echo reporter Pippa Kelly also scooped a prize when she was highly commended in the Young Journalist of the Year category.
