At the base of Sport Republic's Saints squad rebuild this summer, was the goalkeeping department. With Fraser Forster departing at the end of his contract and Willy Caballero kept around for experienced depth, Alex McCarthy was left as the only possible starter.

The need for a new number one was obvious and it took barely any time at all for Saints to fulfill the need, signing Gavin Bazunu two weeks into June from Manchester City.

The £12m deal was met with excitement by many and skepticism from some. Those feelings were understandable. Bazunu arrived at Saints with 10 international caps for the Republic of Ireland despite only turning 20 in February. But he also hadn't played at any level higher than League One.

Throughout pre-season, Ralph Hasenhuttl refused to state whether it would be Baunu or McCarthy starting on the opening day of the Premier League season but a strong showing in those warm-up games ensured it was the new signing.

Daily Echo:

Somewhat unsurprisingly, it has not been plain sailing for Bazunu. He has started all 15 of Saints Premier League games but kept just one clean sheet in that time. Of course, that record is not all his fault.
