Hampshire 395 and 168 lost to Lancashire 593 by an innings and 30 runs

Hampshire suffered a second heavy defeat in four Specsavers County Championship matches after being bowled out for 168 on the final day at Old Trafford yesterday.

James Anderson (4-20) and Kyle Jarvis (3-49) made the early inroads on the penultimate day before former Hampshire all-rounder Ryan McLaren (3-41) once again reminded his former employers of what they had lost by taking two of the last three wickets to fall, having scored his second Championship century the day before.

Lancashire collected a maximum 24 points from the match while Hampshire earned five.

Seventy minutes’ play was lost to rain in the day’s first session, but the home bowlers still took two wickets to leave the visitors on the brink of defeat at lunch.

Hampshire needed an improbable 117 to make Lancashire bat again while the home side required three wickets to complete the win which hoisted them up to second in the table, 14 points behind leaders Essex.

The first wicket to fall was that of nightwatchman, Matt Salisbury, who edged Anderson’s fifth ball of the day to Dane Vilas at first slip. The rain soon set but shortly after the 12.30 resumption Sean Ervine (13) inside-edged Jarvis onto his leg stump.

In the afternoon session McLaren’s fourth lbw appeal in a few overs against McManus (18) eventually elicited a favourable response.

In his next over he had Kyle Abbott (11) caught down the leg side for 11 gloving a short ball. The game ended when Gareth Berg was also caught down the leg side off Jarvis for 49  (71 balls, eight fours).

Hampshire head coach Craig White said: “It’s hugely disappointing. I thought we were at least a hundred runs short and catches cost us in their first innings. To then find ourselves at 50 for 5 on a pretty good pitch is also extremely disappointing.

“It was always going to be a big ask on the final day, and although there was a bit of fight there, it was too much to ask in the end.

“They totally outplayed us. I’ve told the lads they have to be switched on but we weren’t quite on it and that’s what cost us.

“Jimmy Anderson bowled beautifully but the ball’s allowed to swing and we should be able to combat that. However, it seems that whenever the ball swings or seams, we get into a bit of trouble. So we need to improve on that, work on that, try and stay positive and get back on the horse.”
