Kyle Abbott was left stranded on a career-best 97 as Hampshire were bowled out for 395 by Lancashire at Old Trafford.

James Anderson and former Hampshire star Ryan McLaren took the last two two wickets after Hampshire began day two on 351-8.

Taylor (18) nicked a beauty from Anderson to second slip.

After helping to add an untroubled 43 for the last wicket, Matt Salisbury pulled McLaren high to mid-wicket just when Abbott was a boundary away from his maiden century.

Abbott faced only 134 balls and hit 13 fours.

His sixth first-class half-century replaces his 80 in January 2011 - for the Dolphins against the Titans in South Africa's Supersport series - as his highest first-class score.

Hampshire reached 384-9 after 110 overs so took four of the five available bonus points from the first innings, with Lancashire gaining all three bowling points.

Abbott said: "I was close to my first hundred but it just wasn’t meant to happen and it isn’t the end of the world.

“Brad and Matt batted really well and I couldn’t have asked for much more.

“My game plan is to be positive and I find I defend better when I adopt that approach.

“I’m just pushing my limits and seeing what I am capable of.

“I’d absolutely like to get a first-class hundred and I thought it was there today.

“At least I now know the process and what it takes to get there.”

Abbott finished with 1-17 from his 17 overs as Lancashire reached 278-5 in reply.

“If we can get a couple in the morning and go in with a 50- or 70-run lead that would be great,” he continued.

“The  scoring’s been quick so it’s difficult to know what a good score is.

“The wicket is good but it’s just staring to get a bit variable and I’m sure that will become important as the game progresses.”
