HAMPSHIRE lost their maiden day-night first-class match, against South Africa A, by 251 runs - despite half-centuries from Calvin Dickinson and Tom Alsop.

Academy wicketkeeper-batsman Dickinson made 99 as Hampshire replied to the tourists’ 370-7d with 185.

The South-Africa-born right-hander, made his career-best score from only 102 balls, hitting 15 fours and three sixes, before missing out on his maiden hundred in his third first-class appearance.

Will Smith (18) and Asher Hart (36) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures in Hampshire’s first innings, as Dane Paterson finished with 7-27.

The tourists decided against enforcing the follow-on, instead making 185-1d to set a young Hampshire side 371 to win in the final innings.

Trialist Matt Salisbury (9-1-29-1) took the only wicket in South Africa A’s second innings, trapping Heino Kuhn lbw for ten.

The Hampshire trialist now has six wickets at 24 apiece for the county.

But first-innings double centurion Kuhn’s opening partner, Aiden Markram, responded with an unbeaten 102 (150 balls, 15 fours).

Markram, the tourists' captain, shared an unbroken 153 in 43 overs with Theunis de Bruyn (72no) before declaring.

Chris Wood, in his first first-class match back from injury, was restricted to three overs over the four days, while Mason Crane (30-2-115-0) finished wicketless for the first time over two innings of a first-class match.

Hampshire were bowled out for 119 in 45.5 overs.

Alsop hit 51 (115 balls, eight fours) but captain George Bailey (33), Dickinson (13) and Brad Taylor (13no) were the only others to reach double figures as left-armer Beuran Hendricks took 5-20.
