WINCHESTER’S Ian Saunders reflected on “a crazy couple of days” as City thrashed Blackfield & Langley 6-0 in the Hampshire FA Senior Cup on Wednesday.

Coming on top of Saturday’s amazing FA Cup humbling of National League South side Truro City, it made it ten goals scored and none conceded for a side who, until last weekend, had had little to shout about this season.

But City’s league position – they sit 20th in the Division One South & West – is still a source of concern and Saunders says he would gladly exchange both cup successes for the precious currency of Southern League points at home to basement boys Bridgwater on Saturday and at Wantage Town on Tuesday.

“The FA Cup is great for kudos and much-needed finance and I love the Hampshire Senior Cup (HSC), but I’d give them both up for league points,” he said. “We’ve got bottom-of-the-league on Saturday and second-to-bottom on Tuesday.

“It’s been a crazy couple of days with the two cup wins and I’m really pleased, clearly. But equally I wouldn’t mind seeing a bit of that action in the league.

“We’ve done well this week, but we haven’t arrived yet. We’re not the finished article and it’s all about continuing to work and train hard. If we do, hopefully some points will come our way.”

With Saunders resting some of his big guns, fit-again Sam Wilson took centre stage with a hat-trick against Blackfield, backed by two from Howard Neighbour and one from Joe Briggs.

They were Wilson’s first competitive goals of the season following his summer move from Salisbury.

Adam Tomasso also got some minutes under his belt after a month out and, encouragingly for City, the defender/midfielder has opted to stay at the club despite keen interest from Blackfield and Andover Town.

Craig Feeney, Jamie Brown, Adam Roberts and Ross Bottomley will all be back on Saturday with City’s one question mark being young defender Joe Hayward, who is waiting for the doctor’s all-clear after bowing out at half-time against Truro with mild concussion.

*Goals by Lewis Ross (penalty) and Zac Willis brought Fawley AFC back from behind for a 2-1 HSC win over Alton Town on Wednesday.

Brockenhurst exited the competition 2-0 at home to a young AFC Bournemouth side. Ex-Millwall youth striker Mikael Ndjoli and Romanian youth international Mihai Dobre scored for the Cherries.
