THE end of the Big Freeze could be in sight – but not before Hampshire is subjected to another snowfall. Weather forecasters last night said a slow thaw of the packed snow and ice currently covering many of the county’s smaller roads and pavements would lead to warmer weather.

But they warned that the county is in for another dusting of snow tonight before things get any better.

A Met Office forecaster said: “Temperatures are going to be slightly less cold than they have been, although it will still feel bitter.

“Hampshire is set for another period of snow tonight which could last for a few hours.

“However it is likely to turn to sleet and rain by daybreak tomorrow.

“Temperatures are likely to be around 4C or 5C in the daytime, particularly towards the end of the week, but it will still drop out to 0C or just below at nights.”

Southampton City Council last night reassured residents it has enough rock salt to cover the city’s main roads for another week – however a dwindling stock of rock salt means Hampshire County Council will salt its main roads just once a day until it gets a new delivery.

Southampton’s salt supplies had reached just 35 tonnes, enough for one round, but a delivery of 160 tonnes was confirmed for today.

Roads boss Cllr Matthew Dean thanked residents for their work across the city clearing minor roads of ice.

He said: “The community spirit in the city must be applauded and I’d like to thank all those who have taken the trouble to do this.

“Given the huge demands on the highways service as well as the national shortage of grit and salt, Southampton City Council has and will continue to focus on keeping the city’s key routes clear.”

Hampshire’s fleet of gritting lorries has used more than 13,000 tonnes of salt to clear the main road network, which carries 85 per cent of traffic, since the severe weather began last December 17.

However, stocks are now running low but the council was hoping for a delivery of salt from Cheshire would replenish supplies.

The authority has also launched a dedicated helpline for elderly or vulnerable adults to help them through the cold snap. It said anyone who felt at risk from the cold or who had been unable to leave their home to buy food should ring Hants Direct on 0845 605 563.
