It's time to dig out your running shoes as one of Southampton’s biggest events returns to the city.

Runners and joggers will be pounding the city’s streets as they take part in the annual ABP Southampton Marathon.

The highly anticipated event attracts thousands of people to the city every year.

Taking place on Sunday, April 7, this is everything you need to know.

ABP Southampton Marathon

Daily Echo:

Race timings

7am - Race Village open (Registration, Bag Drop and Toilets)

8.45am - Full Marathon and Half Marathon warm up

9am - Full Marathon and Half Marathon start

9.45am – 10k and 5k warm up

10am – 10k and 5k start

12.30pm - Winners award presentation (Guildhall Square stage)

3.30pm - Mascot Mile and Fun Run (meet in Guildhall Square)

The cut off times for the 5k and 10k is two hours, the Half Marathon three hours and the Full Marathon is six hours.

The routes

All distances start and finish at Southampton Guildhall Square.

5k route

The 5K starts at 10am.

This route begins in the city centre before taking you through Queen’s Park for a spot of entertainment to keep you going.

With St Mary’s stadium in your sights, runners will head towards Solent University past more of the city’s green spaces.

You’ll then be on the home straight ready to focus on the finish line.

10k route

The 10k race starts at 10am.

This route begins at Guildhall Square and takes runners through Queen’s Park.

You’ll then run over the Itchen Bridge, and following a loop around you’ll head back towards the city centre, taking you right past St Mary’s Stadium.

Continuing through St Mary’s, using the underpass, you’ll run through more of the city’s green spaces, in the shadow of Solent University.

With a final loop, you’ll be on to the home straight towards the finish line.

Half marathon

The half marathon starts at 9am.

Starting at Guildhall Square, runners will then go past the city docks before running over the Itchen Bridge.

Following a section by the shoreline at Weston Shore, the route takes you inside St Mary’s stadium.

Passing over Northam Bridge with riverside views once again, you will run through Riverside Park before crossing into Portswood and running through Southampton Common.

Runners will then head back to the city centre to finish in Guildhall Square.

Marathon

The full marathon starts at 9am.

The two-lap racecourse offers a ‘spectacular’ route beginning and ending at the Guildhall.

This route begins in the city centre before running past the docks, then over the Itchen Bridge.

Following a section by the shoreline at Weston Shore, the route takes you inside St Mary’s stadium.

Passing over Northam Bridge with riverside views once again, you will run through Riverside Park before crossing into Portswood and running through Southampton Common.

Then, it’s time for the second lap.

Where do I need to go?

The Race Village is in and around Southampton Guildhall Square.

It includes the information/registration desk, bag drop, toilets, start/finish line, charity village, other stalls and the stage for entertainment and winner presentations.

Due to road closures and pedestrianised areas the village cannot be accessed by car.

Several roads in Southampton will be shut as the various races get underway.

Hydration is particularly important, so here are all the places participants can grab a drink.

WS1 – Central Bridge (All Distances) 3k / 1.8 miles and 15.5 miles

WS2 – Cooper’s Lane (10k, Half, Full) 6k / 5.4 miles and 19 miles

WS3 – Macnaghten Rd (Half and Full) 7.9 miles and 21.6 miles

WS4 – Woodmill Ln Car Park (Half and Full) (Gels too!) 9.4 miles and 23.1 miles

WS5 – University Road (Half and Full) 10.5 miles and 24 miles

WS6 – Run Company Southampton (Full Only) (Gels and Lucozade) 14.2 miles
