Romsey Choral Society is throwing open its doors with a special singing workshop for people across the county.

Taking place at Romsey Methodist Church on Sunday, January 14, the workshop will give attendees the chance to learn some of Bach’s St John Passion and see if joining a choir would be right for them.

It's estimated that 2.8m Britons are currently choir members.

Research also shows that singing in a group can improve physical and mental health, as singing exercises people's brains as well as their bodies, helping improve breathing and posture.

This New Year, Romsey Choral Society (RCS) is looking for new members from across Hampshire, particularly tenors and basses.

RCS numbers around 80 singers, singing a wide range of music from plainchant to jazz.

It performs four concerts a year, two of which are in the historic surroundings of Romsey Abbey, under the lively direction of acclaimed musical director Richard Pearce.

RCS is holding a Choral Workshop to offer the chance to get a feel for the choir and learn some of J.S. Bach's famous St John Passion, which RCS will be performing in Romsey Abbey on March 23.

The RCS Choral Workshop is open to all and will take place on Sunday, January 14 from 1.15pm until 5.15 pm at Romsey Methodist Church, The Hundred.

The cost is £12 and includes music hire and refreshments.
