Fawley refinery has since confirmed that the work that required a 'higher volume use of flares' has now been completed.

ExxonMobil has apolgised for any disturbance caused.

People living nearby were previously warned to expect noise and smoke this weekend.

An operational update was issued by ExxonMobil, which detailed the use of the petrochemical complex’s flares.

The site’s four flares act as a safety valve.
