A NEW outdoor space for school pupils created by community donations has been opened by the Bishop of Southampton.

Bursledon Infant and Junior School pupils welcomed Bishop Debbie Sellin to the school on this week to open their spiritual garden.

The outdoor space off Long Lane was previously overgrown and unusable until a group of volunteers transformed it into a space where children can reflect and enjoy nature.

Bishop Sellin said: “People have said this area was a wasteland and 16 skips were used to clear it, but after a big community effort it looks amazing.

“I think it’s incredibly creative and it’s very interesting to hear the children talk about how they are going to value this space.

“This is a huge opportunity for them to express their faith in different ways and in nature.”

Materials including wood, cement, sand, paint, bird feeders and more were donated to the school by Wickes.

Operations manager Ingrid Monteiro said: “It should be every business’s ethos to be a part of their communities. The more we do, the more integrated we will be.

“This is invaluable to the kids and the next generations to come.”

The space boasts a solar water feature, a large wooden cross, a seated circle, and more.

On top of that, pupils are currently making 'eco-bricks' to create a wall that will in time run along the back of the space.

Executive headteacher Kerry Stamp said: “We are so grateful for the time and dedication given by volunteers and staff - it really embraces our vision and values, and I cannot wait to see how the natural beauty will develop over time.

“This space is going to be really vital as we really support, teach and focus on developing our awareness of mental health and wellbeing.”
