Met Office 5-day weather forecast for Southampton after UK's hottest day on record

For the first time ever, the mercury topped 40C in places, causing heat fuelled fires and widespread transport disruption.

A new record of 40.3C, was provisionally recorded in Coningsby, in Lincolnshire, beating the previous record of 38.7C in Cambridge three years ago.

Heatwave over: Southampton weather forecast

Ending on a high, literally, the heatwave that has gripped the nation is finally at an end and it will feel fresher over the next few days, according to the Met Office.

Here’s what the national weather service is predicting for the rest of the week.

Wednesday

In contrast to the last few days, Wednesday is expected to be overcast at times but with plenty of sunny intervals throughout the day.

While it is likely to stay dry, those cloudy conditions will help to bring temperatures down to a more manageable 24C.

Thursday

More cloud moves in on Thursday so it won't feel as bright as it has of late, however, you can still expect temperatures in the low 20s.

Friday

Brightening a little towards the end of the week, more sunny spells are likely on Friday but temperatures dipping slightly with lows of 15C and highs of up to 22C.

Saturday and Sunday

Lots of sunshine is predicted for the weekend with the mercury expected to start climbing again by Sunday.
